I like food. A lot. And I’m curious how my diet affects my body, my mind, and my emotions. I’d like to trust my instincts and eat according to what my body wants, but after years of ignoring my hunger cues, eating to comfort myself, and being surrounded by over processed junk I’ve lost the inate ability to choose my foods. I want to eat foods that fuel my running obsession and keep my body strong without feeling deprived.

From Atkins to veganism, zealous devotees of a diet proclaim its virtues to all who will listen. “Effortless weight loss!” “More energy!” “Clearer skin!” “Better sleep!” I can’t help but wonder how many of these claims are true and how many are, shall we say, over optimistic assessments from the converted. So I’ve decided to conduct an experiment of one. For three months, I’m going to document my food intake, exercise, and general well being in order to determine how different ways of eating will affect my health.

Month 1: “normal” eating

Month 2: no added sugars

Month 3: Paleo diet
